Attack of the KILLER swan!

Last night Stephen and I went out with Heather and Simon and Heather's mom to take some engagement pictures. Heather mentioned that there was a pond with some swans in the community where her grandma lived, so we went to check it out. As soon as we saw the daddy swan, he started stalking us, and let me tell you, he looked scary.

We walked past the mama swan on her nest, and over to the bridge, and the daddy swan followed us there. At one point he thrust his long neck through the fence, and it was really scary.

Heather's mom walked back towards the nest so that we could take a few pictures in peace, and a few minutes later we watched the swan jump entirely through the fence and charge her. I thought she was done for, but we didn't hear any screaming, so we figured she had gotten away. No sooner did we see the swan again than he was traveling rapidly towards us on the bridge, and when he actually took off (we didn't know he could do that...) we thought WE were done for. But he didn't clear the bridge, and we ran away. Fast. Notice the charging swan in the background.

We went to the other side of the pond, where we were nowhere near the nest and the daddy swan couldn't see us. It didn't matter. He swam all the way around to charge the man with the camera, who promptly ran and did not get any pictures of the attack. I would have done the same.

Lesson learned... don't mess with the daddy swan. Pretty much ever, but especially when he's nesting. We never even got close enough to see any babies if we had been looking for them.
